Într-o mică gară din Cehoslovacia ocupată de naziști, spre finalul celui de-Al Doilea Război Mondial, tânărul Miloš Hrma își începe ucenicia ca impiegat, preocupat mai degrabă de propriile nesiguranțe și de trezirea la maturitate decât de istoria dramatică ce se desfășoară în jurul lui. Între rutina provincială, umorul absurd al colegilor și tensiunea discretă a războiului, viața gării devine un microcosmos al societății cehe, unde banalul și tragicul coexistă într-o formă subtil ironică.

Adaptat după nuvela omonimă (1965) a lui Bohumil Hrabal și scris chiar în colaborare cu autorul, filmul marchează debutul în lungmetraj al lui Jiří Menzel și una dintre operele definitorii ale Noului Val Cehoslovac.

Sub aparența unei comedii de inițiere, filmul explorează relația dintre individ și istorie, sexualitatea și responsabilitatea, dar și rezistența discretă a oamenilor obișnuiți în fața ideologiilor opresive - un tip de umanism ironic profund hrabalian. Distins cu Oscarul pentru cel mai bun film străin în 1968, Closely Watched Trains rămâne o meditație despre maturizare, absurdul cotidian și fragilitatea eroismului.

Closely Watched Trains (Jiří Menzel, 1966)

In a small railway station in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, toward the end of the Second World War, the young Miloš Hrma begins his apprenticeship as a train dispatcher, more preoccupied with his own insecurities and awakening adulthood than with the dramatic history unfolding around him. Between provincial routine, the absurd humor of his colleagues, and the discreet tension of wartime, the life of the station becomes a microcosm of Czech society, where the banal and the tragic coexist in a subtly ironic form.

Adapted from Bohumil Hrabal’s novella of the same name (1965) and written in collaboration with the author himself, the film marks Jiří Menzel’s feature debut and stands as one of the defining works of the Czechoslovak New Wave.

Under the guise of a coming-of-age comedy, the film explores the relationship between the individual and history, sexuality and responsibility, as well as the quiet resistance of ordinary people in the face of oppressive ideologies - a form of deeply Hrabal-esque ironic humanism. Awarded the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968, Closely Watched Trains remains a meditation on maturation, everyday absurdity, and the fragility of heroism.
